At PRANA, eating better for the planet has always been central to our mission. While the link between food choices and health is widely accepted, their environmental impact is less known. Yet, the stakes are high and present an urgent problem, which will sooner or later affect all of us in one way or another.
In our opinion, businesses today have a responsibility to address those issues. At PRANA, this responsibility is part of our DNA. In fact, our raison d’être is to provide a better world for future generations. Thus, through its existence, PRANA has chosen to exclusively offer products that are 100% organic.
We hope to inspire you to eat organic, so that our beautiful planet, and consequently the human race, remain healthy for a very long time.
What is Organic Food ?
Organic agriculture is based on four guiding principles:
1) Principle of health: organic agriculture should sustain and enhance the health of soils, plants, animals, humans and the planet as one and indivisible.
2) Principle of ecology : organic agriculture should be based on living ecological systems and cycles, work with them, emulate them and help sustain them.
3) Principle of fairness: organic agriculture should build on relationships that ensure fairness with regard to the common environment and life opportunities.
4) Principle of care: organic agriculture should be managed in a precautionary and responsible manner to protect the health and well-being of current and future generations and the environment.
Certified organic products are heavily regulated and come with a guarantee: a product that bears the “Organic Canada” logo is guaranteed to be free of synthetic pesticides and herbicides, chemical fertilizers, GMOs, cloned products, and artificial preservatives, flavours or colours. At PRANA, all of our products are certified organic by Ecocert Canada, a third-party organization that audits us at least once a year.
Eating Organic Means Voting for the Environment
A UN report recently submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council is severely critical of the use of large-scale pesticide in all regions of the world. The report says pesticides have “catastrophic impacts on the environment, human health and society as a whole”, provoking an estimated 200,000 deaths a year, UN experts have concluded. (1)
In North America, over 600 different chemical products are used in order to supposedly increase crop yield and resistance. Billions of tons of highly toxic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides or insecticides are dumped into the fields, and thus into soils and streams. However, the National Academy of Sciences states that 90% of these products have not been tested for long-term adverse effects on human health before being considered “safe”.
According to a study at Cornell University, 99.9% of the pesticides used in conventional agriculture end up directly in the ecosystem, contaminating the atmosphere, soils and streams (2). They cause terrestrial acidification and water-table pollution, which runs off into lakes and rivers.
Meanwhile, organic agriculture prohibits the use of these toxic products, opting instead to promote well-managed agricultural lands, natural methods to fight pests, healthy soils and the vitality of the ecosystem, which foods are a part of. Organic farming places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation and requires farmers to use techniques that mimic the natural cycles of plant growth.
Organic foods can significantly reduce the release of these toxic products on our planet, and ultimately in our body. A study from 2005 shows that a drastic decrease of the concentration of pesticides in children’s urine can be observed as soon as 15 days after switching to a mostly organic diet. (3)
Eating Organic to Reduce Energy Consumption
Traditional agriculture is very stressful to the ecosystem. In addition to dumping astronomical quantities of highly toxic chemicals in nature, it also demands a lot more energy per unit of production than organic agriculture. Conventional production calls for chemical fertilizers, usually derived from petroleum or other fossil fuels. The extraction, transformation and transport of these products require a lot of energy and produces large amounts of greenhouse gases (4).
Organic agriculture, by contrast, relies on more natural alternatives such as the use of manure to fertilize crops instead of chemical fertilizers. It is therefore much less dependent on fossil fuels and petroleum, which considerably reduces its environmental footprint.
